NHL Pioneers Trademark Licensing to Prediction Markets in Major Sports First
The National Hockey League has broken new ground by signing multi-year licensing agreements with prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket. This marks the first time a major U.S. sports league has authorized such platforms to use its official trademarks, positioning them to compete directly with established sportsbook operators.
Prediction markets are experiencing explosive growth, with weekly volumes surpassing $2 billion for the first time. Sports betting accounted for $414.7 million of this activity last week alone. The NHL's MOVE comes as these platforms secure significant funding—Kalshi recently raised $300 million while Polymarket achieved a $2 billion valuation.
"Partnering with market leaders Kalshi and Polymarket creates unparalleled fan engagement opportunities during our season," said NHL Business President Keith Wachtel. The league's endorsement signals institutional validation for prediction markets as they mature beyond speculative trading into mainstream sports entertainment.
